This way things I have recorded as Ogg or Flac or FLV files from youtube will get automatically coded into MP3 or Mpeg2 format compatibility sake. PS3 has a rather limited set if codecs and file support. This way people with Vista or whatever can play mp3s and movies and whatnot without me having to setup a windows share for them.Īlso on the file server I have a second uPNP service that will transcode media on the fly so that I can browse and watch it on my Playstation 3. On my file server I have a automatic indexing service setup so that media is picked up and shared via uPnP stuff. No 'live tv' stuff, but any show I want to watch I always record it so it's not a big deal.

But I can't figure out how to play Mythtv stuff over MCE for some bizzare reason. On my roomate's Vista system it'll show Mythtv's recorded shows and whatnot on the network neighborhood stuff as well as play them just fine via windows media player.

This provides all the TiVO-like functionality, but remotely.

On my laptop I can install the Mythtv-frontend (without recording or database features) and then it'll automagically detect and configure itself to the backend with no user intervention. With Mythtv I can do recordings and listings over a web-based interface from any computer in the house. It would be nice if MCE supported being a uPnP client. There's tonnes of extra bits like Yougle if you want to watch YouTube or something on it, and on top of all that you can buy an XBox 360 cheap as chips and watch your stuff from any room in the house, including live and recorded telly. It can play and record telly out the box no tedious mucking about required. Buy Vista Premium, Media Centre comes built-in on that. I presume you can still do that with 2.0 like you could with 1.0. AppleTV and hack it to add more codecs and things like that.
